Keeping the Human in the Loop: Controls for an AI-Enabled Close
Speed is the obvious benefit of AI in month-end close. The less obvious requirement is governance. When AI drafts a reconciliation or suggests a variance explanation, someone still has to own the result.
Practically, that means keeping a clear review step for anything that feeds reported figures, documenting where AI was used, and treating AI output as a draft until a qualified reviewer signs off. The goal isn't to slow the close down. It's to make sure acceleration doesn't quietly erode the controls that make the numbers trustworthy.
The teams getting this right treat AI like a capable but junior team member: fast, helpful, and never the final word on the numbers.
